During the pre-year, the students choose the six subjects they will study in the Diploma Programme from the 6 subject groups.
Language A: English A Language and Literature, Finnish A Literature (or a self-taught language A literature)
Language B/ab initio: English B, Finnish B, French B, German ab initio (or two languages A from group 1!)
Individuals and Societies: History, Psychology, Economics, ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies)
Experimental Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies)
Mathematics: Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (HL/SL) or Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation (HL/SL)
Electives: Another subject from groups 2, 3 or 4.
Over the course of the two years:
students can choose only six subjects:
students must take one subject from each group, although a student can take TWO Group 1 subjects and leave out Group 2
students can leace out Group 3 if he/she wants to study BIO, CHE&PHY
students can take three languages only when one of them is a self taught language
write an Extended Essay of about 4,000 words in a Diploma subject
study four courses of Theory of Knowledge, three in DP1 and one in DP2
plan and implement their own CAS programme (Creativity, Activity, Service)
Three or four of the subjects taken must be studied at higher level (HL), 2-3 at standard level (SL)
