The book American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures was written by America Ferrera to shed light on the experiences of being an immigrant or the child of immigrants in America. This book uses a collection of personal accounts from prominent people, in a variety of fields, to create a platform for first generation immigrants to speak their mind. Our assignment was to read the introduction to the book, read Ferrera's essay, and finally choose an author from the book to read about and analyze. I chose the infamous Lin Manuel Miranda. During this unit my class and I read a book entitled "10 Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now" by Jaron Lanier. We were later broken into groups and asked to pick a specific chapter to analyze and to create a sldieshow presentation afterwards to teach the rest of the class about it's contents. My group picked Ch. 6 which describes how social media is destroying each user's ability to empathize with others. After analyzing our chapter, and taking notes on everyone else's, we finally had to take a stance on the argument. We were all asked to make a defensive claim, find evidence to support it, and finally address a counterargument for each claim.
For this mini-project, my class and I were asked to pick a song and analyze its lyrics. We had to identify and explain at least three literary devices used in the song. I used the song "Like Him" by Tyler the Creator. Then, we used the slideshow on the right to share our thesis, claim, and evidence arguing that our song is the "GOAT" (greatest of all time). Afterwards we read and reviewed three of our peers’ presentations and left them feedback on their analysis and argumentation. We used the information in the presentation to write our final essay.
After studying American poems and songs, my class and I wrote a script for a radio commercial to sell an All American meal or snack of our choosing. This was a combined project between Ap Lang and Film. Our commercial had to contain at least 2 lines from one of the poems or songs we studied in class. As a part of this project we had to not only write a script, but also record our commercial, play it for the class to receive feedback, and re-record or edit the commercial into our final product.
