For this grade level project my class and I wrote an updated scene of The Great Gatsby inspired by the issues of social class posed by the novel. We were asked to choose a scene from Ch. 7, 8, or 9 to revise or we could add a "deleted scene" with a clear connection to the novel. While the original book was set in the 1920s, part of the project was also modernizing the story and setting it in the 2000s. To record our short films we took a trip to RJR Props where we used their private jet set to help film out scene. We stepped in the shoes of an actual movie production company during the completion of this project because not only did our class record a short film, but we also wrote a storyboard, wrote a script, blocked and rehearsed the scene, created a shot list, marketed the film throughout the school, and finally screened the final product in front of a live audience.
Here is a slideshow that outlines, step by step, the process of the creation of my group's The Great Gatsby short film. It outlines my experience as a PA (personal assistant) as well as the contributions of my fellow group members. Additionally, it includes some behind the scenes (BTS) footage from the day we actually recorded our final product at RJR props. Please click through the slideshow on the right to learn more.
