For this essay my class and I were asked to read the text "Why I Wrote The Crucible" by Arthur Miller and to write a rhetorical essay describing his claim and the rhetorical choices he made to support it. For context, in 1952 Arthur Miller, American playwright and author of The Crucible, was unfairly accused of being a communist. This encouraged Miller to learn more about the Salem Witch Trials so he traveled to Salem, Massachusetts to research them. His infamous play, The Crucible, was the result of his research. Later on following his creation of the play The Crucible, Arthur Miller wrote a text entitled “Why I Wrote The Crucible” to describe the literary decisions behind his play. Additionally, due to The Crucible’s immense popularity, a movie adaptation was made in 1996 further inspiring Arthur Miller to clarify his reasons for the play through his text “Why I Wrote The Crucible”. Ulitmately Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as an allegory to critique the hunt for communists in America and as a reflection of his own emotions during the 20th century. From this assignment I was learned how to identify the rhetorical situation of a text and how to explore the limitations and implications of my claim in my writing.
