For this essay my class and I were asked to write an essay describing which song should be considered the GOAT (greatest of all time). I chose the song "Like Him" by Tyler, the Creator. "Like Him" is a song from Tyler's recent album "Chromakopia" that touches on the themes of grief, self-discovery, and self-acceptance while exploring the complex emotions Tyler feels about his father's absence and how it has impacted his identity. We had to identify 3 literary devices used in the song and use them as evidence to persuade the reader that our song is undoubtedly the GOAT. Read my essay on the right!
For this essay my class and I were tasked with reading the The Great Gatsby and writing an argumentative essay to argue if The Great Gatsby is an allegory for social class in America, what does the fate of the characters reveal about American society and the American Dream? The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The novel, narrated by Nick Carraway, explores the life of mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, who is known for his extravagant parties thrown to win back his lost love and life-long obsession, Daisy Buchanan. This novel is set in the Jazz Age, a time of economic prosperity and cultural change during the 1920s on Long Island’s North Shore, and it was heavily inspired by Scott’s personal experiences with failed love, the struggle for wealth, and the barriers of social class. More specifically, the tragic love story was influenced by Fitzgerald’s failed relationship with Ginerva King, a former wealthy socialite. Fitzgerald used Jay Gatsby to reflect his own struggles with achieving the American Dream and to express the superficiality of the upper class as a whole. From this assignment I was refreshed on the proper format of a formal argumentative essay and I learned how to explore the limitations and implications of my argument in my writing.
