For this essay my class and I were asked to argue whether or not Arthur Miller’s portrayal of Tituba was historically accurate. For context, in 1952 Arthur Miller, American playwright and author of The Crucible, was unfairly accused of being a communist. This encouraged Miller to learn more about the Salem Witch Trials so he traveled to Salem, Massachusetts to research them. His infamous play, The Crucible, was the result of his research. Miller included, “A Note on Historical Accuracy” at the beginning of the play. He claims that “the fate of each character is exactly that of his historical model, and there is no one in the drama who did not play a similar - and in some cases exactly the same role in history.” With that in mind Tituba was one of the main characters from the play and the subject of this essay. From this assignment I was refreshed on the proper format of a formal essay and I learned how to explore the limitations and implications of my argument in my writing.
