To volunteer means to give back to your community. When I say community I am not limiting the word to just the people living near your geographic area. Community can refer to a group of people with similar characteristics, interets, goals, attitudes, etc. Drew requires us to volunteer for 100 hours during our highschool career because it gives us students the opportunity to explore interests outside the classroom, discover new passions, create new relationships that can help us in our future academic or professional career, and finally to push us to simply give back to the community that has given so much to us. I try and seek out any opportunity I can to give back to my different communities. Here are some examples...
The most frequent place I have volunteered is at my karate studio. From 2021 to 2023, three days a week, three classes per day, for 45 minutes per class I would volunteer at my studio and teach people of all ages how to defend themselves. This includes the little ninja class (children ages 5-7), the beginner class (people ages 8 and up), and the advanced class. In my studio, we follow five tenets: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. I teach my students these important values to help them through spaces filled with uncertainty, doubt, and low self-esteem. I am really grateful that I have the opportunity to help them grow to their highest potential and to simply support them like Tang Soo Do has supported me.
For Georgia State's Day of Service my aunt and I volunteered at Medshare, a non-profit organization that recovers medical supplies/equipment and redistributes them to needy hospitals in developing countries.
Throughout the years my girl scout troop has volunteered at the Atlanta Community Food Bank at least 5 times a year. The Atlanta Community Food Bank is an organization that works with hundreds of non-profit organization to collect and distribute donated food and goods. It is one of our favorite places to volunteer because it helps our community and because it is honestly really fun.
