For this grade level project my class and I explored a variety of different global conflicts. We researched different facets of the issue such as what might have caused the conflict, what tools might have been used to amplify the conflict, etc. Then, in the end, we questioned what we can do to learn from these conflicts and grow as a society. I chose to explore the issues of racial injustice and gender inequailty in America. This is because as an African American women I can relate to both of these long-lasting societal issues. Let's break down how we applied the concept to different classes.
For this class, I was tasked with designing a WW2 inspired poster that uses propaganda to convey a clear message. I made my propaganda poster about racial injustice and police brutality in America. Due to the racial discrimination our nation was built upon, systems like the criminal justice system are embedded with policies and practices that lead to the unfair treatment of others based on race. People of color have been disproportionately affected by countless discriminatory practices like racial profiling, unlawful arrests, and police violence, so I created my poster to shed light to these important problems. I used images from the black lives matter movement to emotionally connect to the viewer, I listed some of the countless african americans affected by police brutality so people could see the sheer scale of this vital issue, and I chose the slogan “liberty and justice for all” because it illustrates the hypocracy present in our own American pledge of allegiance.
For this class, my group (Kenadie, Alex, Zariah) and I were asked to create a guernica piece, based on Pablo Picasso's famous anti-war painting, propagating a global conflict. We were also asked to include various cubist elements, a visual arts style invented by Picasso, in our piece. We chose to advocate for women's rights. Historically, women have experienced constant discrimination and oppression, resulting in limited access to education, employment opportunities, healthcare, and strong representation. By advocating for women's rights, we work towards a more just and equitable world where all individuals, regardless of gender, have the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their full potential. Cubist techniques were used in painting by breaking down 3-D, detailed objects and depicting them as flat, geometric shapes. You can use principles of design like color to convey emotions by using recognizable colors like blue for sadness or red for rage/anger.
