We’re officially one sixth of the way through the year, and the pressure of a new semester can feel crushing especially after the stress of a progress report. However, in recent times there have been other plights plaguing students nowadays.
With authorizations of I.C.E being allowed to storm schools in order to find people to deport, potential destruction of the Department of Education, D.O.G.E slashing budgets and more, it would only be reasonable to be nervous or scared.
However, with all of these issues it is of the utmost importance that both us as a student body as well as the staff members here at Douglas band together to weather through these troubles and get through this as a team.
Our district has vowed to protect their students from oncoming threats, but we need to make sure that we help each other to create a community that is safe from both exterior and interior forces.
However, there is only a certain extent that we can do and it then becomes up to our school to help us with what is needed. Luckily, the school has begun to truly listen to students through things like the principal lunches and more.
We at the Highlander wish you all well and we hope you have a safe and restful spring break. Stay strong.

Once more we’ve reached that time of year, where students are tired and desperately in need of a break to relax and unwind from the many stressful school weeks.
Much to the joy of students, we are mere days away from a two week break where we may all be full of joy and merry.
Now this is amazing and has been a long time coming but there’s one thing we at The Highlander emphasize students to do. Genuinely take some time to stop, and relax.
We as a society sometimes stress over work during a break or worry about what is yet to come but we insist that you try not to. Take some time off of your phone to maybe read or bake some sweet treats for the holiday season, spend time with loved ones or whatever strikes your fancy.
We recommend not postponing assignments for the last minute to become stressed for the last bit of your break, but to get them done as soon as possible in order to truly enjoy your time off. You also will still have what you’ve learned fresh in your mind to make whatever assignments or homework you have easier.
In sum, take time for yourself this winter break, use your break to relax and have a good ol’ time. We at the Highlander wish you all a very joyful winter break!

The beginning of a school year is always a struggle for many students and staff, and this year is no different with there being many issues that must be dealt with.
The football team recently faced disgusting racist verbal attacks from another school’s students at a game at Nelson High School, and they wonder if this will repeat at other away games.
Many students have faced other struggles with the start of the year. Some students are unable to get chromebooks, which are essential to almost every class while others are struggling with having a good balance between their school life and their personal life.
Though many of these issues cause struggles, we look to the help of our friends and classmates and teachers, We also recommend using the resources here at school. The adults here at DDHS are here to help you.
This year there is only one student in the 3rd period Highlander class, which may be the lowest it has ever been in its 71 years of running as the school paper.
However, the paper was able to receive help from the 2nd period Journalism class with writing stories and helping in making the newspaper as lively as ever. These students who may have never written a news story in their life are stepping up and trying as hard as they can and they are succeeding.
Whether it’s personal issues or school-wide issues, we face them together as a community. We struggle and, perhaps, we fail, but we find solace in facing it together.
