“A Complete Unknown,” directed by James Mangold, is a biographical film based on Bob Dylan, released in December. The film has grossed over $73.8 million in the United States and Canada. The film stars Timothee Chalemet as Bob Dylan, Edward Norton as Peter Seeger, Monica Barboo as Joan Baez and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo. It’s all right.
“A Complete Unknown” follows the story of a young Bob Dylan as he discovers his way around the industry and evolution from a young up and coming folk artist to his transition into rock music.
Set in New York City in the early to late 60s, the story dives into many of Bob Dylan’s personal relationships with figures like folk singers Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, and Dylan’s muse and lover Sylvie Russo.
The film goes through some very significant moments throughout young Bob Dylan’s career such as his brief relationship with Joan Baez, his departure from Sylvie Russo, his friendship between him and Woody Guthrie, played by Scoot McNairy, and Dylan’s attempt to move away from folk towards rock music with the release of his seventh studio album “Highway 61 Revisited,” one of the most influential and praised albums of all time.
“A Complete Unknown”was all right at best. It doesn’t feel like there’s any passion in the project The performances and story felt dull through the whole film and was kind of a drag. I do think that the film was set in a good mood and the overall look of the film was very appealing and the addition of the music was very good. I understand in this movie they can’t go over years of his career in a professional manner but still it feels like most of the scenes were filler and they were focusing on way too much for this to be enjoyable. None of these significant moments in his career shown in the film don’t feel significant in the movie at all.
