The teachers union and the school district agreed to a two year contract in November, avoiding a potential strike.
This last summer and fall, the teachers union, the David Douglas Education Association (DDEA), and the school district were in lengthy negotiations over the new contract. The previous contract was from July 1, 2021 - June 30,2024. From June to November, teachers were working on the old contract. The union and the district bargained with each other, presenting their own demands. Then they come to an agreement on the contract. Then the union members voted on the contract.
DDEA’s contract demands contained salary increases, better working conditions and safety for students and teachers.
The union got a 9% increase in their salary. First year teachers on the bottom of the salary scale who now make $48,469 would make roughly $52,831 on the new contract.
They didn’t get all they were asking for. They were told that OSHA wouldn’t allow air conditioning and that it was too expensive for the school.
The new contract was voted upon by union members and approved, and the new contract will last until the end of next school year, when the bargaining process will already be back in full swing.
