Students and staff raised $22,000 for the 2025 Scots Angel Olivia Kay Evans, the most money ever raised for the Scots Angel.
Olivia fell critically ill on October 29th, and was diagnosed with sepsis, but the cause was unknown. Because of this, Olivia suffered multiple cardiac arrest events, leading to tissue death and other issues due to the prolonged loss of oxygen. Olivia was intubated in the PICU and was on ECMO to help her oxygenate and circulate her blood. She will need several surgeries to address the damage and will require extensive rehab.
After being introduced to the community by athletic director Brad Joy at the December assembly, March 4th marked the end of the fundraiser, with Joy discussing the results of the fundraiser and what this means for Olivia’s future.
Joy noted that this is the most amount of money raised through Scot’s Angels fundraisers. “Next year, the school will have raised a quarter million dollars for Scot’s Angels through the years,” said Joy. Olivia and her family were then given a check for $22,000 and, in a powerful moment, the student body stood, joined their hands in ‘O’s, and sang happy birthday to Olivia.
“How can a group of students from SE Portland Make this happen?” said Joy, “You learned her story and it moved something inside you. “That something is empathy, which is different from sympathy. Empathy makes you want to do something."
This year, the Scot’s Angel advisory contest raised a total of $8,700.23, which is $3,000 more than ever before. Math teacher Ryan Joy’s class advisory took first place with a total of $1,067.47 donated. This was followed by business teacher Cole Samuel’s advisory raising $1,006.28 and English teacher Brian Graham’s advisory raising $399.50.
“Every person in this room has a story,” said Brad Joy, “Treat each other well. Love everyone. Move forward.”
