Just because the penny has helped in minimal circumstances, it should be abolished because it is no longer a useful tool in the modern market. With inflation, the power of a penny has significantly declined, making it nearly impossible to use in everyday transactions. In addition, significantly fewer people use cash. People adapted and used things like credit and debit cards, PayPal, Zelle, and Apple Pay.
Producing pennies is also inefficient, taking three cents to make. This has led to mints losing millions of dollars each year. The resources that are being used could be used in better situations to uphold the economy.
Elimination of the penny would also save time for businesses and consumers. Counting and handling pennies slows down purchases, causing long delays. Countries, such as Canada and Australia, have already phased out their smallest denominations and their economy has not been disrupted because of them rounding to the nearest five cents. Phasing out the penny would ultimately be the best decision, creating less waste while keeping a stable economy.
