Watch the Explicit Direct Instruction Model video.  Think about how EDI relates to the practices you are currently using in your classroom.  Which practices stand out to you as something you are already doing or have done in the past?

Good Instruction is Always Good Instruction

7 Parts to an EDI Lesson

Independent Practice, Homework, Periodic Review, and Assessments

Independent practice is not a time for students to teach themselves the lesson.  Students should know what types of problems they will encounter and what strategies they will be using to solve the problems.

The main goal of independent practice is for students to have additional repetitions to allow them to transfer the new skills and strategies that they have learned to their working memory.  The students must move the new skills and strategies from their short-term memory to their long-term memory.  This will require many repetitions of the material through independent practice, homework, periodic review, and assessments.

Explicit Teaching strategies

John Hattie's research confirmed the need to use explicit direct instruction in the classroom.  Students need clear examples modeled for them to help them to understand the expectations and the content.  Explicit teaching enables students to be engaged with content using skills and strategies that they understand.
