Growing your human resouces with explicit Direct instruction
Directions
Watch the Explicit Direct Instruction Model video. Think about how EDI relates to the practices you are currently using in your classroom. Which practices stand out to you as something you are already doing or have done in the past?

Good Instruction is Always Good Instruction
7 Parts to an EDI Lesson
Learning Objective- The objective is taken straight from the content standards.
Activate Prior Knowledge- The goal of this phase is for the teacher to have students remember a previous lesson that will tie this new learning with something the students already know.
Concept Development- This phase is where teachers provide vocabulary support to students, provide examples and non-examples, and ask Check for Understanding Questions to ensure students are ready to move to the next phase of the lesson.
Skill Development- The teacher provides a very detailed, step-by-step model to show their thinking process to the students. To check for understanding, the teacher will ask the student to describe the thinking process that is used with the strategy that was modeled. For every type of problem students will be working, teachers must work a similar problem first. Teachers must model their thinking and the strategy that students will be using to solve the problem.
Guided Practice- Students work the problems step-by-step while the teacher monitors the process.
Relevance- Teacher helps the students to see why this lesson is important to them.
Closure- Teacher does a final check to make sure that students are ready to move to independent practice.
Independent Practice, Homework, Periodic Review, and Assessments
Independent practice is not a time for students to teach themselves the lesson. Students should know what types of problems they will encounter and what strategies they will be using to solve the problems.
The main goal of independent practice is for students to have additional repetitions to allow them to transfer the new skills and strategies that they have learned to their working memory. The students must move the new skills and strategies from their short-term memory to their long-term memory. This will require many repetitions of the material through independent practice, homework, periodic review, and assessments.

Explicit Teaching strategies
John Hattie's research confirmed the need to use explicit direct instruction in the classroom. Students need clear examples modeled for them to help them to understand the expectations and the content. Explicit teaching enables students to be engaged with content using skills and strategies that they understand.
