About the Authors

Jennifer Gribben

Jennifer Gribben is the District Coordinator for ELA and Social Studies PreK-12 for the Darlington County School District.  Jennifer's current role allows her to serve on several state committees for the development of the ELA and social studies standards and test creation at the state level.  She is a former instructional coach, middle school English and social studies teacher, English I teacher, gifted and talented instructor and New Tech Facilitator. 

Jennifer has presented at several national and South Carolina state conferences.  Some of her presentations have included building culture and community in the middle school classroom, single gender strategies for ELA, standards deconstruction and lesson alignment, and effective use of technology. 

Jennifer received a BS in Education from Ohio University. She later earned a Master's Degree from Gardner-Webb University in Executive Leadership Studies.  Jennifer has completed additional training in the areas of Reading Recovery, LETRS, Gifted and Talented and literacy instruction K-12.  She is currently continuing her education at Gardner-Webb University in the EdD program for Curriculum and Instruction.

Michelle Nelson

Michelle Nelson is an instructional coach at Clinton High School in Clinton, SC. In this role, she works with teachers to create engaging classrooms where student learning is the top priority. She has worked to create and implement MTSS in her school. Michelle is also a member of her district's Instructional Leadership Team.  She is a former high school English teacher who has taught English I, II, III, and IV. Michelle also created and taught the curriculum for Speech and Film Studies at her previous school.  

Michelle received her BS in Secondary Education English from the University of South Carolina Spartanburg. She received a Masters Degree in Education from Southern Wesleyan University. She later earned her Add-on in Administration from Gardner-Webb University. Michelle is currently in the EdD program for Curriculum and Instruction at Gardner-Webb.  Michelle has been in the educational field for twenty years.

Description

This PLM was created to support secondary education English teachers who are struggling to prevent student disengagement in ELA classrooms. This PLM was based on John Hattie's 10 habits. The creators of this PLM also used Explicit DIRECT Instruction and Rigorous curriculum design to ground their ideas in proven RESEARCH. This PLM will give teachers a place to find ideas and strategies to help make their classrooms a successful learning environment.

The learning cycle featured in this project is based on the STAR Legacy Cycle developed by the IRIS Center (2013:http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/) and based on the work of Dr. John Braanford and colleagues (National Research Council, 2000).
