A message from Principal Santos ...
We had so much fun last week celebrating 100 days of learning and kicking off Black History Month. There are a lot of events this month.
The creativity displayed by our students for the 100th day of school was nothing short of extraordinary. From whimsical interpretations of fashion to thoughtful representations of their achievements and aspirations. As I watched learning tasks and projects, each told a story of growth, joy and the unique journey each student has undertaken in the first 100 days.
Our Black History Month calendar and google classroom contains all the events and information for contents and activities.
As we reflect on the purpose of Black History Month, I have shared in prior Bright Times what our mission at Solar is during this important month of the year --
While it is important to speak truth about significant historical events, it is also imperative that we focus on the the many accomplishments and celebrations of leaders throughout history. The key is to not only acknowledge the hard truths about black history but also to ensure all of our students feel empowered because they see their identities and culture. All students should engage in lessons whose narratives aren’t always steeped in oppression and struggle." Black leaders have created masterpieces, innovated extraordinary technology and continue to be some of the most influential revolutionaries." As we engage in learning experiences this month, and throughout the year, we will make a concerted effort to ensure that our trailblazers understand that Black history is American History full of rich culture and full of human experience.
Did you know...?
The Great Wall of Benin (in the geographic region of modern-day Nigeria) was estimated to be four times longer than the Great Wall of China?
A living language developed in the kingdom of Aksum (near modern-day Eritrea and northern Ethiopia) is one of the great literary languages of the ancient world?
INTENT TO RETURN SURVEY
We need your help planning for next year. Please complete a separate form for each child currently attending Solar. We need 100% of our current families to complete the return survey by April 30th.
HAVE AN INCREDIBLE WEEK!
At Solar Prep for Girls our uniform policy includes a very specific dress code. We believe that if a student is dressed for success they will feel confident which positively impacts academic performance. Our hope is that our uniform creates a sense of pride for our school and our school community. We appreciate your support in ensuring your student comes to school dressed appropriately and ready to engage in learning.
We will continue providing feedback to students out of dress code to ensure a safe and inclusive environment.
