Why I went into education...Its allure as an agent to make this world into a better place was powerful. I still feel the same about teaching today.
On Saturday, you'll find me...Sharing life with KC centered around our thirteen acre farm, the honest trees, the honest rain and honest birds. Four rescue dogs also contribute to the ambience of digging in the soil, reading books out loud and finding the peace of wild things.
As an undergraduate at the University of Houston in Texas, I took a sociology course entitled El Barrio (the neighborhood) as a senior to complete my humanities requirements for a biochemistry degree. Midway through the course, I was given the option to do yet ANOTHER thesis paper (no!) or work as a tutor at an alternative education center for Mexican American high school students. I choose the second option, became enthralled with the practice, the people and the community. I was hooked from Day One. I was offered a teaching position at this institution upon my college graduation. The rest has been one long amazing journey.
