Squash

This year has been nothing short of exhilarating, filled with a packed calendar and an enthusiastic wave of squash players keen to take part in every possible event. The numerous KZN trials in the first term played a major role for those aiming to make provincial teams, and we were incredibly proud of our Clifton participants who not only performed outstandingly but also impressed with their exemplary manners and sportsmanship.

Our squash captains, James Witherspoon and ‘Mabatho Seeiso, have been phenomenal, and we’re deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work. We were fortunate to have Vice-Captains this year to share the responsibilities, and both Nicholas Davies and Gemma Goldie were exceptional in their roles.

Following the qualifying rounds, the KZN teams were finalised. Congratulations to our u13 A boys’ team members, James Witherspoon (top seed) and Brett Roberts; u13 B players, William Watt-Pringle, Liam Muller, and Cayden Flockhart; and ‘Mabatho Seeiso, who was selected for the u13 B girls’ team. The u11 A boys’ team was entirely made up of Clifton pupils, including Grant Muller, Litsitso Makara, Kian Moor, and Ben Leitch, with Sibu Mthethwa and Jack Warburton chosen for the u11 B team. The experience gained from trials proved invaluable, as all participants showed remarkable improvement in both their confidence and standard of play.

In the third term, we organised an internal tournament for each grade from Grade 0 to Grade 7—a fun and valuable opportunity for students to practice their skills with peers. Our senior players played a crucial role, assisting at these tournaments by helping younger players stay relaxed and motivated, keeping rallies alive, and guiding those new to scoring. The seniors generously volunteered their time, and their support was much appreciated.

The busy fourth term featured the Inter-schools’ League held every Monday afternoon, where our teams performed admirably. Although the KZN Stayers tournament, scheduled on two Mondays, affected our League participation, the teams gave their best. A huge thank you to Mrs. Fyvie for her commitment in ensuring the smooth organization of the league matches.

Our calendar’s highlight is always the Championships, where we determine the top boy and girl players of the year. In 2024, the Girls’ Squash Champion was ‘Mabatho Seeiso, with Gemma Goldie as runner-up, while James Witherspoon took the Boys’ Squash Champion title, with Brett Roberts as runner-up. Both champions received the Norman Ingledew Trophy and had their names engraved on the Squash Board.

As the year wraps up, the energy on the squash courts remains high. We look forward to another wonderful year in this fantastic sport. A heartfelt thank you to our coach, Brian, for his enthusiasm, incredible patience, and boundless energy.
