Dear Parents,
This week, as I sat watching our Junior Christmas Nativity Play, I was struck once again by the beauty of life’s journey. Those precious little children, so full of innocence and joy, enchanted us all with their heartfelt performance. Their sweetness on stage filled the room with a sense of fulfillment, reminding us of the fleeting nature of childhood.
It feels like only yesterday that our Grade 7 parents watched their children perform similar plays. Now, many of them are preparing to say goodbye as their teenagers embark on the next chapter of life, some heading off to boarding schools where time together becomes less frequent.
The contrast is moving, those once talkative little ones now growing into independent teens, and us, as parents, finding ourselves working harder for their attention or their company. Yet, even in these challenges, there is something profoundly beautiful, the transformation of our children and the privilege of walking alongside them through every stage.
After the play, I addressed the audience and shared a thought that bears repeating: cherish these moments, for they pass in the blink of an eye. While we all know that time flies, there’s a part of us that believes we are immune to its speed, until we look back and wonder where it all went.
As this time of year brings farewells and transitions, we are reminded that every phase of development carries its own unique magic. As parents, we strive to provide our children with the stability they need to navigate these stages safely. At the same time, we’re not merely observers. We experience life alongside them, sharing their joys, challenges, and triumphs.
It’s equally important that our children see us navigating life’s difficulties. How we respond to challenges, how we grow through them, these moments are teaching tools. They show our children that life’s trials can shape us in meaningful ways.
As the festive season approaches, I encourage us all to reflect on what we give to one another. Just as God gave us the ultimate gift of His Son, Jesus, let us focus on the gifts we share with our loved ones. Are we giving life, love, and joy? Or are we unknowingly sowing discord and negativity?
Our junior children remind us so beautifully of the importance of giving wholeheartedly, with joy and simplicity. May their example inspire us to embrace this season with gratitude and generosity.
