Hike to Highmoor - 9-11 October

The Grade 6 trip to Highmoor was packed with first-time experiences. For many, it was their first time hiking such a long distance or traversing such rugged terrain. Some had never carried their belongings on their backs or hiked before! And, for nearly all, sleeping in a cave was an entirely new adventure.

True to their adventurous Clifton spirit, the children embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. On the first day, we had to pick up the pace as a storm brewed in the distance, but the children remained brave and focused, determined to reach the destination. They slept in caves as thunder rumbled, the breeze chilled the air, and baboons barked in the distance.

Though some got a little carried away with being in charge of themselves some groups even ate all their food on the first day, it was a great learning experience. A few had never cooked before and made oats on the stove without realizing they needed to add water! Hopefully the children arrived back at Clifton more domesticated than how they left.

While sleep was not easy, it offered unique experiences, like watching the moon rise over the peaks and the sun rise in the valley below. The children spent hours exploring mountain paths, climbing boulders, and swimming in icy pools. They cooked their own meals, washed up without help, and ended each day singing around the glow of their torches before drifting off to sleep.

The hikes to Caracal and Assvoelkrans Caves were challenging enough to teach the boys and girls valuable lessons. Carrying backpacks, they discovered their limits—and that they could push beyond them. They learned the importance of teamwork, support, and stamina. Each child dug deep and realized they were capable of far more than they imagined. The girls kept one anothers’ spirits high, singing tunes along the way and supporting one another, with absolutely no moaning or groaning.

The Grade 6s returned home filthy dirty, in much need of a good bath, but with hearts full of pride. It is the positive memories, sense of achievement, and stunning beauty that will stay with them long after the trip.
