Social emotional learning is a critical aspect of Clifton’s offering. We are proud to be able to offer weekly lessons in this regard, all aimed at ‘future proofing’ our children, and to be able to equip them with the necessary skills to survive and thrive.
There can’t be many schools out there that make provision for a lesson dedicated to outdoor learning, much less any that set aside an entire day to outdoor learning.
Our Grade 6s set off on Monday morning for their much-anticipated adventure to Babanango, with history as our starting point. Following the success of our Spionkop outing earlier this term, we deepened our understanding by visiting the legendary battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Standing on those rolling hills, with stories of bravery and strategy etched into the landscape, the children were captivated by the history of the Zulu nation and their encounters with the British.
On 12 September, our Grade 5 boys and girls took their studies of the San, Khoikhoi, and South African heritage to new heights with an unforgettable field trip to the Kamberg.
Pancake Day – Thank You, Maths!
Our Pancake Day was more than just tasty – it was a learning adventure! Maths helped us explore volume and practice measurement while making pancakes. English joined in too, as we followed step-by-step instructions to whip up our delicious treats.
Eager boys and girls had rucksacks packed, rearing to go on this term’s SP Hike. Our destination; Injisuthi camp – Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife - for an overnight stay at Grindstone Cave, high in the mountains.
The Art outing started off at a local sculptor’s studio - Sarah Richards. We were warmly welcomed to her home and split into three groups to be shown the process of making bronze sculptures.
Our Grade 6s set off bright and early for their day trip to Spionkop, an outing designed to connect the children to some of our fascinating local history. Upon arrival at Spionkop Lodge, the children were welcomed by Lynette and Raymond Herron, grandparents of Oliver Gibbs, and treated to hot chocolate and muffins before beginning their tour at Mount Alice.
Our Grade 5 boys and girls recently set off on an exciting adventure at Gwahumbe Game Lodge and Spa, staying in a campsite nestled in a scenic valley.
The trip began with a 3km walk to camp, where two curious giraffes greeted the group along the way. After setting up tents, teamwork activities got everyone into the spirit of camp life.
Our Grade 7s walked all the way from South Africa to Botswana, as we have done since the onset of our traditional Botswana tour. Admittedly it is only the few hundred metres between border posts as we crossed Kipling’s great, grey-green, greasy Limpopo, but it was the first part of our adventure!
As part of the Grade 5 Social Sciences curriculum, our children are exploring the diverse continent of Africa, with a particular focus on South Africa’s rich history and cultural heritage. This year, our journey began with an in-depth look at key historical figures, especially the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
A highlight on the Grade 4 calendar is our visit to Ebersohn’s Farm for their annual Bonsmara Bull Sale. This year, we were lucky enough to attend on the actual sale day, which made the atmosphere all the more exciting. We got to see everything set up and ready for showtime. First, we toured the bulls and learnt what characteristics buyers look for when choosing which bull to purchase. We learnt a little about genetics, feeding, and other important features. We also got up close (very close!) to these enormous animals.
