Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that term 3 is already at its end and that this is the final newsletter. It seems like yesterday that staff gathered for our getaway, refreshing and reconnecting with our purpose as "Champions of Childhood".
Dear Parents,
We have had a wonderful week, filled with activity and purpose. The Grade 6s returned from Babanango this afternoon and will have been enthralled by the stories of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. The Grade 7s have been focusing on their theatre production which is being showcased next week.
Dear Parents,
Friday last week brought me the unique pleasure of judging the forts built by the children in their Inter-house fort building competition. How many headmasters get to do that?
The morning office schedule left no time to change from my formal clothes into something more suitable.
Dear Parents,
We celebrated Spring Day on Monday….in the cold mist. This is Nottingham Road. Despite the weather’s sense of humour, our gardens are beginning to burst into life, with flowers starting to bloom and colours slowly brightening up the campus.
Dear Parents,
The long weekend, which brought a wonderful respite from the routines and busyness of the term, now feels like a distant memory as we settle back into school life.
Dear Parents,
The carpark…that hallowed ground where fresh news spreads at the coffee caravan, grapevines thrive and misconceptions mushroom, often way out of proportion ….has been the topic of conversation for a while. The main theme being: “The carpark is a problem”. I have invited staff to join me in the carpark on a few occasions and it appears that the carpark itself seems fine.
Dear Parents,

At Clifton, we honour the integrity of childhood, embracing the messy, the marvellous, and the meaningful moments that shape our children into resilient, curious, and courageous young people. As we continue our shared journey in nurturing confident, compassionate, and capable children, I would like to offer a gentle reflection, inspired by the Let It Grow Movement, Angela Duckworth’s research on grit, and the insights of psychologist Jonathan Haidt.
Dear Parents,
“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”
- Albert Schweitzer
Clifton staff and children were unable to participate in Nelson Mandela International Day activities as 18 July fell in the July holiday. However, we have not missed the opportunity to be of service and different grades have committed time and energy to a range of projects in support of our community during the first week of term. Some made and distributed games, made playdough, donated clothing whilst others spent time meeting and getting to know each other.
Dear Parents,
It is always a relief to hear the bus from Johannesburg arriving safely on campus, bringing the final load of boarders to school and then a delight to see hordes of smiling children arriving for assembly on the first day of school. Clean tracksuits and civvies dash down toward the Junior Primary and smart Greys with shining shoes head up to the Senior Primary. In a flash life returns to Clifton as happy children shout out their greetings and share stories as they line up for first assembly. Soon the holiday will be a distant memory as we settle into a busy and exciting third term.
