Hi, my name is Jessica Charalel, and I am a senior at Clarkstown North High School. I have been in the Science Research Program for three years.
My research in my sophomore year consisted of studies of firewalls and how the general complexity of them lead to more cyber attacks due to users not being able to fully understand the software. My research delved into the idea of how to make firewalls both effective and understandable. For my midyear presentation in 2021, I detailed the findings of the article "Firewall Usability: An Experiment Investigating the Usability of Personal Firewalls," which put my research into a coherent experimental paper.
In junior year, my research continued with the implications of software and computer modeling, but towards a more climate driven approach. I investigated how computer modeling systems such as the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and the Marine Biogeochemical Library (MARBL) model the natural systems of the world's oceans.
As a senior with three years in Science Research under my belt, I researched a dataset modeling the ocean variability of the Northern European Shelf under three specific variables to measure the effect each variable would have on each other and under the preexisting conditions of added carbon dioxide in the environment. I then constructed a research paper detailing my findings and observations after monitoring and running the computer modeling program and noted the areas of change within the models constructed. After, I submitted this research paper to the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
For my mid-year presentation, I was able to explain my final project in detail. To the left is a link to this video.
