Hi all! My name is Ilyssa and I am graduating from North and the Science Research program this June, and will be continuing my education at New York University this fall. I began my Science Research journey as a sophomore, and this past summer was lucky enough to take part in a study in collaboration with Dr. Suzanne Bertisch, the Harvard Football Players Study, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. While I do not intend to pursue a career in a STEM field, the research skills I have gained via this program will continue to manifest in other endeavors, as well as play a role in my ultimate success.
Given the nature of the study, it was difficult to report on the data and experience overall. The identity of the Players were kept highly confidential, thus I was not always given access to data sets and could not reflect on results. I was unable to submit this paper for research publication due to confidentiality as well.
This spring, Dr. Schuchman challenged us to complete research on a broad topic, giving us the freedom to narrow our scope to any subject within a general assigned topic. I chose to focus on Music - more specifically the significance of music from a sociological lens, as well as understanding its political influence. Unlike the study I took part in, this research paper allowed me to study a topic I plan to incorporate into my future career and other aspirations.
This fall, I will be attending New York University as a Gender and Sexuality Studies major on the Pre-Law track. Throughout high school, I have been involved with various levels of political campaigning and advocacy, and intend to expand on these interests at NYU. I am extremely grateful for the Science Research program and Dr. Schuchman especially, and look forward to utilizing the skills I have acquired in a new environment for my future.
