Hi, I am Sanjay Kasi and I am a senior at Clarkstown North. Here is my science research journey.
Early Ideas:
During most of the 2019-2020 school year (my first year in the course) I explored two different topics. My first idea was looking at different stock market indicators and determining which indicators were best correlated to the future performance of the stock. Although I found this topic interesting, the fact that many people had already explored this turned me away from the topic, as I wanted to research something new and unique. Next, I explored the sports science field. As someone who loves sports, I've always found using science to determine the best training methods and improve performance extremely interesting. However, I felt that albeit interesting, it would be very difficult to carry out research, as much of the research required advanced tools that many researchers simply do not have access to.
Internship:
In June 2020, I reached out to Professor Aaron Wolf at Oregon State University. He is in charge of the transboundary water sharing program at the university, looking at the dynamics of water diplomacy between nations. This topic is especially important today in a world where the water stress is becoming more prevalent due to increasing population (increased demand) and climate change (causing decreased supply). I had worked with Dr. Wolf on a project in 8th grade relating to the history of the Indus Waters Treaty, so I felt that reaching out to him would be a good way to get started in the research proccess and talk to new faculty members. He responded and introduced me to the rest of the transboundary freshwater dispute database (TFDD) team. TFDD's mission is to code data from all water treaties signed in modern history and make it available for use from other researchers. I joined the coding efforts in late June and have been coding since then.
Paper (About my project):
My paper contains details about my topic, coding work, and research project.
Future Plans: I will be attending Stanford University in the Fall. I plan to do something in business/finance and hope to research the affects of major environmental events/issues on businesses and the market. Additionally, I will be on the Stanford fencing team.
