Discuss Maori culture and the significance of the Koru shape in their art, and what it represents
Read Maui and the Sun. observing art, culture, and Koru designs. Compare with the Biblical Creation story
Draw a picture using the Koru shape as the main focus and colour.
Include the koru from the story Maui and the sun within a day and night artwork. Example shown above.
As a class discuss warm and cool colours, colours used for daytime and nighttime
Use paint wash to create your background and leave to dry
On black card use markers and more paint to create the shape of a tree.
Cut out your tree and glue it onto your paint wash background.
Paint on the leaves keeping in mind what colours to use on the day side and the night side.
Add extra elements for the day and night side. For example, Stars at night or the sun in the day.

Follow the teachers instructions to fold your recycled magazine into a Christmas tree.
With the teachers help use a hot glue gun to attach your tree to a base.
Whilst this is drying. Create the star for the top of your tree.
The teacher will now spray paint and snow paint your tree.
Add your Star to your tree.
