Watch portions of these three short videos about snow:
What kinds of things do you see, hear and feel happening when you watch snow?
Make a list of action words - in what ways can snow move? Students brainstorm words under "action of snow" on the board.
Describe the snow - what do you see, hear, taste, smell, touch? Students brainstorm words under "description of snow".
Pretend that you are seeing snow for the first time - and you have NO idea what is causing it. What might be happening to make that in the sky? What could you compare snow with? Make similes under "snow is like".
Combine words and ideas from the three lists into lines. Use this question as a guide:
“Which action word goes with a description of snow, and what snow is like?” eg swirling, white cotton wool
Make a list of words that work together.
Students to read alternate lines slowly. Take a photo with an ipad to view for the next lesson.
God created different seasons, and made something beautiful about each season.
Think about these questions:
Which words do you like just the way they are?
Are there any words too much alike?
Do you see any that could be more interesting?
Should any words by abandoned?
What word would be good for the beginning?
What should come next?
How shall we end it?
What would be a good title?
Students to put their own words together to create poetic lines that make their own individual poems. Create 3-5 lines.
Here are some words that some Year 3 students came up with.
They then took words from each list and created poetry lines made up of descriptive phrases or sentences to make you feel and think about snow.
If you haven't copied some phrases or sentences or created your own, please look at this to help you.
Choose 5 favourite lines to write in your writing book.
Make a snowflake and copy your poem onto black paper, using white pens. If you can't fit all 5 lines on your snowflake then write 3!
You could create a black cardboard snowflake and write the poem onto that - the first video shows you how to fold and cut snowflakes. There is also a step by step guide to making snowflakes beneath the videos.
Play Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” music while creating good copies!
Vivaldi was an Italian music composer. In his Winter concerto, Vivaldi used his imagination and his knowledge of playing techniques to create musical imagery of the cold.
