EN2-9B uses effective and accurate sentence structure, grammatical features, punctuation conventions and vocabulary relevant to the type of text when responding to and composing texts
Your teacher will talk to you about different kinds of sentences. Some sentences are very short and simple and just contain one idea. Other sentences (compound sentences) combine two or more ideas, sometimes using words like and, because, but, so, when, etc.
After you have had a discussion about these, you will find an activity on Seesaw which allows you to decide which sentences are simple and which sentences are compound.
Prevent means to stop from happening, to not allow it to happen.
Recall means to remember something that has happened before.
To retrieve something means to find it or get it again.
To purchase something means to buy it.

Tender means gentle or not tough. Meat can be described as tender. The way a mother talks to her baby can be described as tender.
Spiral means something that winds around in a circle that is getting bigger or smaller. The lines that curl around on a snail's shell are a spiral.
Stealth means without anyone seeing you, a bit like "sneaky". A lion uses stealth to try and catch its prey without being noticed until it is sure it will be able to catch its dinner.
Stalk - to stalk its prey means that the lion is following its prey, getting ready to catch it.

Brutal - means very cruel. The sailors who landed on Macquarie Island lived "brutal lives" - the way they treated the seals and penguins was very cruel.
Century - a century usually means one hundred years. Those of you who watch or play cricket will have heard about players scoring a century - this means that they score 100 runs (points) for their team.
Haven - a haven is a safe place. Macquarie Island is a described as a haven / safe place for animals in the ocean.
Launch - to launch something means to start it off. A newly built ship is "launched" when it is put into the water for the first time.

Sacred - something that is holy or very special. Can you remember what was sacred in the book 14 Cows for America? Cows were sacred to the Maasai, and the ceremony to give the cows to the diplomat was sacred.
Remote - something that is at a distance. We operate TV's from a distance when we use a remote control. Something that is remote means far away.
Injustice - means unfair.
Wounded - something or someone that is hurt or injured. Who was wounded in the book 14 Cows for America? The Americans after the planes crashed into the skyscrapers.

Perform - if you perform for people, your entertain them by singing, playing an instrument or acting. Yo-Yo Ma performs for people by playing his cello.
Compose - to compose something means to create or write something. Yo-Yo Ma's father was a composer - someone who wrote music.
Seldom means almost never. Yo-Yo Ma seldom went wrong with his music.
Regret - to regret something means to wish it had never happened, or to feel really bad about something you did. Yo-Yo Ma did not regret his decision to travel less and to spend more time with his family. He was glad he made that decision.
