At Valley Middle School, the No Place for Hate Pledge was presented during our advisory period on November 20th. Our NPFH group divided up and went into every classroom, explaining the pledge along with teachers going over NPFH on our advisory slide show. Then the students were given a poster where they could sign the pledge. The NPFH students then brought the posters back to the coordinator to display.
For their first activity, the VMS NPFH Committee organized Unity Day. Students and staff were encouraged to wear orange and organized advisory activities to promote unity and allyship.
For their second activity, the VMS NPFH Committee organized a Tree of Respect activity which involved students in writing down commitments to being respectful of others on campus.
For their third activity, the VMS NPFH Committee focused on the power of words. Students shared some of the negative words they have heard and names they have been called. In advisory groups, students then spoke about the impact of name-calling and how positive words can have a positive impact. The hope is that students will think more about the words they use and their responsibility in building a positive culture at Valley Middle School.
