Aviara Oaks Middle School held its pledge signing on November 18th, 2024.
The No Place for Hate Committee organized empathy circle lessons to build empathy on campus with a focus on perspective taking. The goal is to improve student understanding of empathy, develop more direct connections to others, and see a decrease in negative student interactions on campus. Interactions, such as a student sharing about struggles while her mom battled an illness and another talking about the loss of a pet, allowed students to see opportunities for being a supportive peer and displaying the opportunities we all have to play a positive role in campus culture.
The AOMS No Place for Hate Committee organized a film screening for parents, our community, and students on campus of “The Upstanders.” The film highlights the impact of bullying and exclusionary behavior and also provides ways in which students can make a difference in their school community. After students view the film, they will debrief with advisory teachers and share reflections on a Google Form. The screening and debrief are aimed at addressing incidents of bullying and amplifying student voice.
AOMS No Place for Hate students organized a project to display the results of their hard work on campus. Working in conjunction with our Art department, each student on campus had the opportunity to decorate a rock with positive messages, spreading kindness and inclusivity around the campus. Rocks gardens will be created around the campus where these rocks will be displayed not only for current students, but also future generations of AOMS students. H
