In mid-October, the students in Jefferson's NP4H Committee shared what No Place for Hate is, introduced the No Place for Hate Pledge, shared why they want to be on the NP4H committee, and explained how students would participate in the pledge signing. All students in TK-5 placed their fingerprint on the letters JAGUARS to signify their commitment to supporting our efforts to be No Place for Hate. The letters will be put on a poster to be displayed in a prominent place on campus for all students, staff, and families to see!
For their first activity, Jefferson held a student panel to provide a forum for students to share with their peers the negative impact that teasing and rumors have had on them and their ideas for improving campus culture. The topics and questions for the panel related to the areas in their campus climate survey that displayed the most need for improvement. Questions were developed and asked by students on the No Place for Hate Committee for their peers on the panel. Follow up activities were developed for each class to reflect on the words of the students on the panel. Additionally, pre and post surveys were provided to students to measure the impact of the panel. The post survey showed growth in every area including a 19% increase in students reporting that they were likely to speak up if they heard the spreading of gossip or rumors.
For their 2nd activity, the Jefferson No Place for Hate Committee organized a student panel to teach our 1st-5th grade teachers and students different ways to interrupt unkind, hateful speech. (Interrupt, Educate, Question, and Echo). Students will learn the different strategies through role playing. For grades TK/K, student leaders went to classrooms and demonstrated with a slide show and games. The activity led to students sharing an increased understanding of bias, growth in seeing the importance of speaking up when they hear unkind words, and a growth in confidence in interrupting when students hear unkind words.
For their 3rd No Place for Hate activity, Jefferson Elementary is hosting a school wide event focused on the different cultures represented at our school and in our community around the world. As an IB school, we place emphasis on learning about cultures and identities around the world. Students in all grades TK-5 will sing a song and perform a dance. Additionally, our student leaders will host a No Place for Hate table to share about the importance of not stereotyping, calling names, or telling inappropriate jokes based on different cultures.
