Pacific Rim introduced the No Place for Hate Pledge by grade level and discussed how, together, we help keep our campus kind and safe for everyone.
The committee organized an opportunity for students to make posters on ways to include others and show students that they belong. Students wrote on orange strips of construction paper different ways to include others and included things about themselves that made them feel proud. The No Place for Hate Coordinator connected all of the pieces and the students played a schoolwide game of "I Spy" as they read and noticed different statements made by their peers.
In response to student feedback displayed cases where student's shared negative views of their own identity (the way they look, the color of one's hair,) the No Place for Hate Committee organized a challenge week. The week would have activities each day focused on acceptance of ourselves, celebrating our differences, and including everyone in the Waverider Community.
Day 1: Students "chalked the walk" as an activity, they wrote notes about spreading kindness and offering friendship.
Day 2: Students in each class were asked to write an encouraging note on a post it then passed it to the student on their left. The notes were encouraging words stating what they liked about each other. Students then invited a new friend to sit and play.
Day 3: Students brainstormed ways to be kind to themselves. Then students chose a positive affirmation for themselves. We spoke about why it's important to love yourself. Day 4: Students discussed as a class what inclusion looks like on campus. Students were asked to make a card, picture, or letter for a staff member to show appreciation.
Day 5: Students were asked to talk about something they do well and give themselves a pat on the back. Students were then asked to celebrate something they do differently than most and to give another pat on the back.
For their third activity, Pacific Rim focused on perseverance and empathy with a lesson on living and playing with a disability.
