SCHS students signed the No Place for Hate on January 24th, 2024.
For their first activity, the SCHS No Place for Hate Student Committee presented the Wordslam/Microagression activity (ADL Lesson/Slidedeck) during advisory on February 28th which focused on addressing racial slurs and harassment occurring on campus as comments, jokes, and small slights make up the vast majority of the reported incidents on campus. The goal of the activity is to raise awareness and empower targets and allies to speak up when observing negative incidents on campus.
On March 27th, students participated in an activity on Bias in Our Everyday Lives (ADL Lesson, Slide Deck). The full lesson was condensed for time and coincided with two new activities organized by the No Place for Hate student groups. One is a social media campaign called “Humans of Sage Creek” and the other is an episode on The Sage highlighting some of the work some of our clubs are doing in challenging bias on campus. This lesson also has an optional home component called “Table Talk: Family Conversations at Home”. If you’re interested in continuing the conversation after the lesson at home, you can access the resource here.
For their final activity, SCHS will be launching a social media campaign called the Humans of Sage Creek. The No Place for Hate Student Committee will be interviewing students and sharing personal stories through podcasting. The effort is intended to help students better know their classmates and see the power we all have to build a positive climate on campus. A key question that will be asked of students is "What can you do to make our public spaces--our schools, our parks, our stores, our restaurants, more welcoming for all?"
