Newsela is an online news platform that features high-interest articles, from a variety of sources and with a wide range of topics. Content is updated daily, with stories from a wide range of sources in English and also often in Spanish. All articles are available in five Lexile levels, ranging from around third to 12th grade. Each leveled text features a quiz tailored to that particular article plus a writing prompt that asks students to write and respond to what they've read.
The CSD pays for subscriptions for grades 6-12. This allows for options such as a dashboard to manage students' assignments and view both individual and class results, tracking progress toward meeting the related Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
Newsela is meant for students grades 3 and up.
For all elementary grades, the free version of this program is available.
The paid license for Newsela has been paid for all staff and students from grades 6-12 for the ELA portion.
Both staff and students should access Newsela from the Clever website.
Going through Clever will not only auto log you in, but it also automatically creates your classes for you and will sync from Skyward nightly to update your roster.
