What is Code42 Backup by CrashPlan?

Code42 by CrashPlan is a cloud backup service for files and documents saved on your laptop.

How does it work?

Code42 performs an initial upload of your locally saved files. Thereafter, it will upload updated versions and any new files saved later. It will attempt to upload these updates with moderate frequency of hours or days, but is not a minute-by-minute backup.

Will it interrupt my work or make my internet slow?

Cod42 is designed to run in the background, and will only upload when your laptop is idle. This may mean that your initial backup after installing may take quite some time, several days or longer.

How can I access the backup?

To perform a backup recovery, please contact User Success using the Tech Help Form.

Code42 can be used to retrieve single files, folders, or the entire contents of your computer’s storage. Also, it can be used to retrieve old versions of files, though this is not unlimited.

Do I need to use it?

YES: If you save any files, photos, or documents on your laptop that you'd be sad to lose.

NO: You save everything on Google Drive and if your laptop was flattened by a dump truck, you would laugh at the cruel Fates.

Install and Setup

If Code42 was not set up for you by User Success, you will be instructed to download and install it after receiving your laptop.

Download

1. User login

2. Enter your email address that is associated with your Okta SSO Profiles Burner ID

3. Follow ID login prompts

4. From menu at top of page, browse to:

Client Management > Downloads

5. Find the correct version of the app. The download link is the tiny blue downward arrow at the far right of the row.

   • Most pre-2022 laptops are just “Mac”.

   • If you have a newer “Apple Silicon” Mac, download that instead.
     All of these new Macs have physical function keys, and do NOT have the programmable Touch Bar above the keyboard.

Install

1. After downloading, open the DMG file from Downloads or wherever it was saved.

2. Run the installer, following the prompts. Accept the defaults.

3. After installing, Code42 app will open. It will lead you through setup, asking for your Profile ID email address again.

4. When final setup is complete, you may close or hide the window; it will perform the backup in the background when the app is idle.
