ACCOUNT SECURITY
Burning Man Headquarters and the Reno Office has WiFi access thorought both buildings.
On all floors the 2.4 GHz network is called "bman network" and the 5GHz network is called "bman network (5GHz)."
The current password is available by contacting User Success.
When possible, you should use the bman network (5GHz) network.
The regular bman network operates in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, which is often preferred due to its greater range.
However, in our modern age of technology, where many offices are operating wireless networks, the result is a mess of overlapping signals saturating the available frequency space, resulting in increasingly slow performance, dropped packets, and unhappy users!
The 5GHz network, offers faster data transfer and is less susceptible to interference from other devices, though is does have a shorter range when walls and other objects get in the way, but should still be available throughout the office (Please let tech support know of any dead areas and we can try to adjust the antennae to improve signal strength in the building). There are also fewer offices in the neighborhood using the 5GHz spectrum.
In your System Preferences, select the Network preference pane. Make sure that you are currently connected to the bman network (5GHz) network.
Then click the Advanced... button at the bottom of the pane.
In the Advanced Settings pane, select the Wi-Fi tab and make sure that the bman network (5GHz) network appears above the bman network network in the Preferred Networks list. If they are not in the proper order, you can drag the networks into the proper order.
Your laptop will now join the 5GHz network by default, and only use the 2.4 GHz network when the 5GHz network is out of range.
