A Comparative Analysis of Application Letters from a Register Perspective
Application letters include personal statements written for a graduate degree and cover letters written for a job. This study compares these two types of letters to each other and provides functional interpretations of the linguistic differences between them. The results are helpful to applicants seeking linguistic help and insights.

Seda (she/her) is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree in Applied Linguistics. She received her M.A. degree in TESL from Northern Arizona University in 2020 and her bachelor’s degree in ELT from Middle East Technical University (METU/ODTU). She has almost nine years of English language teaching experience at institutions around the world including Bilkent University (Turkey), Scuola Centro-Fagnani (Italy), and Northern Arizona University. Her research interests include pragmatics, register variation, and corpus linguistics.
