A Note about the Holidays in November

from Ms. Rosario, our Spanish Culture Ambassador

There are many holidays in Spain in November and December. We want the children to understand why these are holidays here and what happens during them.

On November 1, All Saints day is celebrated in Spain, and in other Spanish speaking countries around the world. People take time to remember those who are no longer with us but who had an impact on our lives. In addition people eat typical sweets called Huesos de Santos or Bones of the Saints and “buñuelos”.

On November 2, De los Difuntos or All Souls Day (Day of the Dead in some countries) many people visit the cemeteries to take flowers and pay their respects to those who came before.

These days compliment each other, but should not be confused.

In addition, did you know that on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 12:00 Spain recognized the Princess of Asturias as she celebrated her 18th birthday? At the same time in the Congress, she pledged her loyalty to the Spanish Constitution just as her father the King did when he turned 18 in 1986. This was a unique moment, one which was viewed by people in Spain and around the world.

What's Coming Up?

The Lower School Book Fair is coming on November 16 and 17. More information will be sent home via your child's classroom newsletter.

Please also be sure to check the ASM Calendar on our school website to see everything that's happening.
