Important Reminder:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a green sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".

This week we are beginning a new unit the examines the fiction genre through the classic novel, Don Quixote. Students will focus on character and plot, as well as on literary elements such as characterization, while reading a full-length adapted version of Don Quixote. Our extended writing project includes a 4 paragraph persuasive essay arguing whether they think Don Quixote’s good intentions justify his often calamitous actions. Students will support their claims with reasons and evidence from the text.
Reading:
Reading skills we are developing this week include:
identify the beginning stages of the story’s plot structure (e.g., setting, main character) in the story and make inferences regarding a character’s personality.
compare and contrast Don Quixote’s process for becoming a knight with the process described in “Gloomy Castles and Jousting Knights” from Lesson 1
identify and explain how the author’s word choice and use of figurative language affect the text of The Adventures of Don Quixote

Math: Mrs. Bennett
This week in math class, students are working through the quick chapter- Classify 2-Dimensional Figures. Students are exploring the different ways to classify and organize shapes. Students will realize polygons can be classified by the number of sides, the length of their sides, the types of lines (parallel), and the types of angles. Students will use a Venn Diagram to compare and constrast shapes characteristics. We will then focus on the different types of triangles. Students will identify when a triangle is equilateral, isosceles, and scalene, right, obtuse, and acute.

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
Last week, the students started to learn about the first dynasties in China. This week, we are going to learn about the Han Dynasty. Students will be able to identify at least three cultural achievements of the Han Dynasty, understand the importance of record-keeping in Han culture, and be able to describe one form of Han art or entertainment.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
We will begin "Chapter 9: Jesus is Obedient and Conquers" in our Word of Life workbooks. Students will be able to:
know that after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit across the Jordan River into the desert to be tempted by Satan.
know that Jesus' temptation in the desert fulfilled events of the Old Testament.
know that Jesus shows us that we can conquer our enemies of sin and temptation through the virtue of truthfulness.
know that in the liturgical season of Lent we can participate in Jesus' victory over sin and temptation in our lives.
