For the Graphs below - Work in Pairs to:
Write 3 sentences explaining what is wrong with the above graph
What can a graph tell us?
Write down three questions that someone could answer using this graph
A Correlation is a Link between two variables - it may not necessarily indicate a causal link as it may be coincidental - never the less - Scientists use graphs to visually display correlations and help them talk about these results
Independently answer the following questions about each graph below:
Graph 1
Graph 2
Graph 3
Graph 4
When two variables Link together there are times that people will believe they directly cause the change - if one variable changes then the other must also change. This is not always - and in fact very rarely - the case. Although the examples below can be viewed as quite humorous these can often be misinterpreted with dire consequences. Examples can be seen linking Vaccinations and Autism - this is a famous coincidental correlation - the result being many parents chose not to vaccinate their children despite their being no actual causation.
In the graphs below you should see some examples of correlations that are purely coincidental.
Write a paragraph about each graph explaining the coincidence. The first graph is done for you as an example
Graph 1 - Shark Attacks and Ice Cream Sales
Graph 2 - Fresh Lemons vs Highway Fatalities
Graph 3 - Global Temperature vs Pirates
Graph 4 - Cheese consumption vs deaths in bedsheets
There are 3 graphs for you to draw on GRAPH PAPER. They get more difficult.
HINTS:
For a challenge please draw the appropriate graph from the table of data below:
