Atoms
Everything is made from atoms, including you
Atoms are tiny particles that are far too small to see, even with a microscope
There are over hundred different types of atoms:
- Carbon atoms
- Hydrogen atoms
- Oxygen atoms
- Iron atoms etc…
A substance that has millions of just one type of atom are called elements
Elements cannot be broken down into anything simpler by chemical reactions
Copper element made up of only copper atoms
Carbon element made up of only carbon atoms
Helium element made up of only helium atoms
The Periodic Table of the Elements shows us how many different types of atoms there are - There are currently 118 elements but new ones could be discovered!
Molecules
Molecules
When atoms of the same element join together we get a molecule of that element
- Some atoms are not stable as single atoms
Compounds
Compounds
A compound is made when atoms of different elements join together by chemical bonds
- Has to contain at least two different atoms
- Can only be called a molecule is everything within it is a non-metal
Mixtures
Mixtures
If you mix molecules or atoms of two different elements or compounds together, but they are NOT chemically bonded then it is called a mixture

Each substance keeps it original properties
This makes mixtures very easy to separate
