Cornstellation Log Entry 7/11-7/15, 2019
Post date: Jul 15, 2019 4:10:3 PM
Observation Issues:
(Night 2, July 12) The Jog telescope is not working, it only moves in the left direction. Same with the controller (the handpaddle) in the control room, all directions only move to the left. The Xbox controller seems to be moving fine but when we want to be precise, we are unable to.
Could possibly be because tracking was on
(Night 2, July 12) EVORA crashed once. If Evora seems to crash but you can’t close it out, check the filter wheel because the problem might be there instead!
(Night 2, July 12) We also had problems dealing with IRAF, the instructions online missed an important step; here is the correct steps on how to operate IRAF:
xgterm &
ds9 &
cd iraf/
cl
cd /home/mro/data/
imexam [filename] #filename do not need the ‘.fits’
#just hover around the image and press r
#press q to quit from IRAF
#NOTE: the lower the value of the FWHM [Full-Width Half Max], the better the Gaussian Distribution. For this, try to adjust the focus via Bifrost. To see change, the increment of 3000 would do the trick.
(Morning, July 13) EVORA suddenly stopped taking images when we were almost done collecting our data causing that all to go to waste. Apparently it wasn’t able to transfer our data over to view it but it’s being stored elsewhere. But we found out that our images from last night were stored on Heimdall in /home/mro/storage/evora_data/image_20190713_*. At this moment, we still do not know what caused this problem.
(Night 3, July 13) EVORA crashed when changing the filter wheel to B filter at exactly 10:36pm.and then crashed again at 11:18pm... and then again at 2:15am. Two transfer images showed up but not evora exactly we had to kill the transfer images by doing Kill - 9 ### and then check if its killed with the psf - ef | grep python
Other Issues
On the last night, we had a ton of flies come out of literally nowhere so we set up some vinegar fly traps downstairs near the bathrooms. We have no idea where they came from since there was no food left downstairs.
