Happy fall everyone! I hope that you all had a chance to enjoy some hot dish on a stick and like me are looking forward to the milder weather that the coming months promise.
The new academic year is in full swing, and we’re excited to welcome our new interns as they settle into their role as doctors in training. Many of our motivated interns have already signed up for the Global Pediatrics Track, a few of whom are highlighted below. We look forward to working with you all in travel and career planning.
Our academic programming is already buzzing with a successful Pre-Departure Orientation last month and our inaugural GEMS evening gathering coming up in October. Next week, our very own Drs. Theilen and Bastug will share the exciting work that they’re doing on viral microbiome sequencing in Uganda and in October we look forward to hosting Dr. Perez-Castaneda from Cuba in conjunction with the School of Nursing and Department of Medicine to discuss novel biotech treatments being used to prevent limb amputations.
We’re also excited to announce a new funding opportunity through the Global Pediatrics Program! Our Small Research Awards are now available on a running basis with an open call for proposals. Please see the details below.
Faculty, as you’re planning travel, please don’t forget to fill our form so we can stay informed on faculty projects and travel.
Stay tuned to upcoming events, follow us on Instagram, and as always, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Tristan Coles, MD
Hello! My name is Tristan Coles and I recently moved to Minnesota from Oklahoma to start my pediatrics residency. I have had an interest in global health for a long time, largely due to a positive experience traveling to China in my undergrad to serve as a camp counselor for kids learning English in rural summer camps. This experience created a passion for traveling outside of my comfort zone to learn about different places, people, and cultures. I have always wanted to combine this passion with my love of medicine and healthcare, and broaden my understanding of how medicine is practiced in different areas outside of the U.S. in hopes of becoming a more well-rounded physician, and person.
Emily Etter, MD
My name is Emily. I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada and grew up doing all things outdoor including running, hiking, biking, and downhill skiing. I also enjoy camping and exploring state or national parks and traveling to new countries internationally with my husband. I’m so excited to be here in Minnesota and have the opportunity to be a part of the global health program!
Amirtha Gourisankar, MD
I grew up in Fort Worth, TX, and spent 2 years in rural India after college, where I learned a lot about community health, other health systems, and worked on intimate partner violence and mental health initiatives. I went to medical school/completed an MPH at Emory in Atlanta, GA and got to do more local-global work with asylum seekers and refugees. All of this and the med-peds program brought me to UMN and I'm so excited to continue learning from various health systems and the global health community here. In my free time, I enjoy spending time outdoors, cooking, and dancing.

You need to complete 75% of the passport to graduate on the Track. Make sure to log into Canvas.umn.edu to document your progress.
Please fill out the Global Pediatrics Program Faculty International Travel form. Note: This doesn't replace the need to register your travel with the University of Minnesota. You must still register at https://global.umn.edu/travel/register.
Please consider a tax-deductible donation, if possible. We use these funds to bring trainees and faculty here from our international partner sites. The trainees do four to six week electives during the summer in our hospitals and clinics. We are grateful that we have been able to bring faculty here as well to present their research and collaborate with colleagues here in Minneapolis.
