The Global Pediatrics Program is seeking applications from UMN pediatric and medicine-pediatric residents in the Global Pediatrics Track for funding to support small research projects. Small awards can range from $500 up to $2,500 per award, which can be applied to residents’ academic projects or to other eligible projects.

Categorical Pediatrics or Medicine-Pediatrics resident on the Global Pediatrics Track
In their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of residency
Focus on children and adolescents between 0 and 19 years of age
Is to be implemented in collaboration with a local, national or international partner site.
Must aim to support partners in one of the following pillars of global health:
Clinical care and patient outcomes (QI)
Advocacy
Partnerships
Education
Has a UMN faculty supervisor and site supervisor (if site is not at UMN)
Residents should meet with the UMN faculty mentor to discuss the following:
Feasibility of the project
The scope
Project duration
Budget (between $500-2,500)
Can only cover in-country (if international) staffing needs
Distribution of funds
Process
Any pay for individual time takes a lot of paperwork on UMN end and the individual’s end
Supplies – Emily Danich will purchase supplies
This is not for resident travel
Cash advances may be possible with a lot of advance planning
Sustainability
IRB submission
Funding will only be released when awarded projects present documentation of local and UMN IRB approval or exemption or deemed not IRB-relevant by the Small Awards Team after review.
Applications are due 6 months prior to departure
Be prepared to resubmit in a timely manor
Funding will not be distributed until IRB has been approved or exempt if IRB review is deemed necessary
Will need at least 3 months for UMN IRB process
High-scoring eligible projects without parent grant funding will be prioritized
Projects that can demonstrate an ask directly from the partner site will be prioritized
Proposals should be small projects that can be completed within 12 months maximum
Proposed work should be developed into an abstract and/or manuscript for publication
After initial review, some applicants may be requested to submit additional information

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis for each academic year
Applicants with funded Small Research Award Grants (SWAGs) will be required to submit a one-page Financial Report and a 1–2-page final progress report within 30 days of completion of their project.
