Meet with Mentor
Choose Site - Fill out an application to participate in an pediatric global health elective.
Develop an Academic Project with your Track Mentor
If planning any type of research during international electives speak with Tina Slusher or your global pediatric mentor immediately
Apply for Grant or Scholarship Opportunities. Be sure to check out the Resident Funding Opportunities page!

Begin thinking about academic project, gathering reading materials about the country and meeting with Track Leadership and your mentor.
Review site info page
Prepare CV, introduction cover letter, and statement of rotation goals & objectives for site
Required for Tanzania, varies for other sites
Ensure passport does not expire with in 6 months of arrival in host country
View GPEDS presentation in Canvas.umn.edu: Know Before You Go: Health and Safety in Global Health
Take MKSA exam on Canvas , must pass w/minimum 80%
Schedule Travel Clinic appointment once you have confirmation on host country
Attend pre-departure orientation, held annually early fall
Cancel continuity clinic for the entire time you will be away
Request PTO: Only available to those doing 2 blocks in a row
Begin applying for a medical license in the country you are traveling (varies by country)
Once flights are booked and other travel plans arranged:
Register w/ STEP ( Smart Traveler Enrollment Program)
Upload all of this information into RMS
Review Social Media & Blogging Policy
Return signed policy to Track Coordinator
Review Travel Packing List
Update the Emergency Contact List for your trip
Update and print your Emergency Contact Card
While on elective work on the requirements. All will need to be submitted upon return and are more easily completed while on the experience
Academic Project Summary
Reflective Essay: review guided questions and consider keeping a journal while abroad to help meet this requirement
Disease Log Top 10: ask Track Coordinator for a copy for your records if desired
Faculty Evaluation of Resident
Do not return home w/out ensuring this is done.
Reminder to be culturally sensitive that this type of model is often very different than our hosts are used to for giving feedback
U of M Photo Waiver
Very important if intending to publish using photos
Submit documents to Track Coordinator, no later than 1 month upon return. After completed the Track Coordinator will submit for you to receive up to $750 travel reimbursement.
