Purchase refundable airline tickets
Often times tickets purchased with flight credits are easily refunded
Purchase tickets with an airline you are likely to use again in addition to a refundable option.
In case of cancellation, you can use the e-credits for another fligh
Avoid travel sites (like expedia) or booking through credit card portal (unless they waive the change fee) if possible, and book directly with the airline. Travel agents/agencies may be ok, but ask them about their cancellation policies.
Apply for grants that will pay for flights through Doximity or AAP
Use travel credit cards for purchases as they often have extra protection for cancellation and may be more lenient than airlines when it comes to flight refunds
Make an account with the airline you are flying with if you have not already. Make sure to link your flight to that account no matter how you purchased it. For example, you can purchase Delta flight through a travel agency, and link that flight to your personal Delta account.
When able, stay in University of Minnesota affiliated housing
If using sites such as Booking.com, AirBnB, etc. select housing with free cancellation
