Global Pediatrics Program Newsletter

Risha Moskalewicz, MD

Director, Global Pediatrics Education

Fall of 2022 is an exciting time for our Global Pediatrics Program. The UMN Global Peds leadership team is hosting the Midwest Consortium of Global Child Health Educators. The Consortium includes our colleagues from Mayo, UW-Madison, MCW, Northwestern, Cincinnati Children’s and Case Western. We will continue our mission of creating and disseminating impactful and collaborative educational scholarship.

Our new global pediatrics chief, Dr. Mounika "Mo" Muttineni, has been a delightful addition to our team this year, and already she has made an impact - launching track events, creating online social media platforms to better create community amongst our global peds residents and designing T-shirts with our logo!

In August our residents, who will be doing global electives this year attended pre-departure orientation. We look forward to continuing to support them as they prepare for their electives at home and abroad. Meanwhile, look for messages on email and Instagram alerting you to the global peds events scheduled for the remainder of the calendar year – coming soon!

Ronke Gbadebo, MBBS, PGY-1

I am from Nigeria and came to the US for my Master's in Maternal and Child Health. The Global Pediatrics Program has a site in my home country with a lot of interesting projects in populations I have worked with in the past and I am super excited to learn more about these projects from a different set of lenses. I am also looking forward to learning more about global health across other countries and populations that the track is involved with. I have two boys and love to spend time outdoors checking out exciting places with them when the weather allows.

Joseph De Jonge, MD, MP1

I am a New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan. I took a meandering path to Medicine (and Med-Peds at UMN), with some detours in New Orleans, Mexico City, and Lima. Along the way I overcame (only) some of my skepticism regarding our healthcare system. I am skeptical too of “global health", but I think that the Global Pediatrics Track here at UMN has a particularly strong commitment to ethics and bidirectional exchange. I hope to learn from and practice in a way that lives up to those ethics wherever that ends up being.

Aisha B. Kasali, MBBS, MPH PGY-1

I was born and raised in Nigeria where I completed my medical school training. I also hold a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I have worked professionally in Global health focused on digital health innovation for maternal, neonatal and child health. My interests are around leveraging low cost, innovative technology solutions to improve health outcomes for children and newborns, especially within underserved communities. I am so excited to join the Global Pediatrics program to continue building on my knowledge, exploring research opportunities and sharing new experiences with fellow residents.

In my free time, I enjoy baking, gardening, trivia nights, and spending time outdoors with my son.

Jennifer "Jen" Udeogu, MD, PGY-1

I am from Nigeria. My medical school was O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University. I'm hoping to do a fellowship after residency.

In my free time, I enjoy Cinematography/ movie production and traveling!

Faculty's Corner

Ellen Diego, M.D., Amoud University, July-August 2022

In 2017, Dr. Hodan J. Abdi founded the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Borama, Somaliland to address a growing need for basic resuscitation and essential newborn care in preventing neonatal deaths. Since its foundation, the NICU has been staffed by Family Medicine (FM) Residents and Faculty trained at Amoud University.

To continue programmatic growth and development, the FM Faculty sought out collaboration with US-based Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine sub-specialty trained physicians. In July of 2022, Dr. Ellen Diego, UMN neonatologist traveled to Borama Regional Hospital to deliver a comprehensive in-country educational training program to strengthen the core residency curriculum in the care of small and sick babies.

The curriculum incorporated a combination of lecture-based and simulation-based education sessions to standardize provision of care at birth and identify gaps in best practice. Throughout the training sessions, the FM Residents developed their skills in quality improvement methodology and identified high rates of admission hypothermia, low rates of hand hygiene, absence of delayed cord clamping and ineffective non-invasive ventilation delivery as targeted areas for change. These gaps will be the focus of ongoing quality improvement initiatives that will be implemented as the University of Minnesota and Amoud University continue to collaborate to reduce site-specific and regional neonatal mortality.

Schedule a Meeting with Emily Danich to Plan Your Global Elective in 2023-24

The goal of meeting with Emily will be to plan your global elective (for the 2023-2024 year), discuss graduation requirements, and help find a global mentor. Visit Emily's appointment calendar to schedule a time before the end of September. If none of the options work with your schedule, please email Emily Danich at edanich@umn.edu. If you would plan to go on a global pediatrics elective in 2023-2024, this meeting must happen so Emily can schedule meetings between you and your faculty global partner lead, so we can find the best elective match.

Global Child Health Literature and Faculty Awards

Please consider a tax-deductible donation, if possible. We use these funds to bring trainees and faculty here from our international partner sites. The trainees do four to six week electives during the summer in our hospitals and clinics. We are grateful that we have been able to bring faculty here as well to present their research and collaborate with colleagues here in Minneapolis.
