Mentoring

Mentee

We will use the information you provide about yourself in the enrollment form to assign you a mentor whose interests are aligned with your own. Mentors and mentees are emailed their mentor matches as soon as possible after the enrollment period ends. Mentors receive a copy of the CV and enrollment form responses so they have a little info on your background prior to your first meeting.

It is recommended you meet with your mentor within the first two months of the intern year (by Aug 31). Thereafter, it is up to you how often you meet. The mentor program is optional but strongly encouraged.

It is your responsibility to set up the initial meeting with your mentor; you will be provided with contact information in order to do this.

Mentor

The goals of this mentor program are to:

The mentor should be available to the resident and meet formally at least once, ideally within the first 2 months of the intern year.

SUGGESTED CONTENT FOR INITIAL MENTOR MEETING

(to take place, ideally, within the first 2 months of the intern year)

Background:  Review resident CV prior to meeting, and then go over it again with them (discussion often reveals much more detail on their background).

General Inventory:  Discuss how are things going in general for them in the residency?

Career Plans:  Determine global health goals and discuss how these can be achieved. Place particular emphasis on preparation during the course of residency.

Elective Opportunities:  A variety of opportunities are available, including those that meet track requirements and do not require travel abroad:

Residents are limited in the number of unfunded electives they select.  Unfunded electives include all time spent outside the established clinics and hospitals for the residency program.  Examples of unfunded electives are research months spent in a lab, time spent abroad in a foreign country, time spent in another state doing a tribal health elective, time doing a course.

Global Health Course:  Should this resident plan to take the ASTMH course? It is a substainal time commitment - online requires review of 270+ hrs of content and in-person requires 4 weeks during Block 12.  In general, residents planning a career in global health should strongly consider it and plan for taking the bi-annual certification exam.

Medical Knowledge for Service Abroad Exam:  14 modules are available in Moodle and intended to assist residents in preparing for the Medical Knowledge for Service Abroad (MKSA) test.  Passing with at least 80% or higher is both a Track Certificate Requirement and a requirement to apply for travel abroad.  This exam is an internal Track exam and is not related to the ASTMH exam.

Global Pediatrics Trach Certificate:  Requirements are described in the Track requirements section of this site.

Scholarly Activity/Academic Project:  Completion and presentation of an academic project is a requirement of the track.

Goals:  Residents work with their Residency Program assigned Mentor to devise an individual learning plan.  Ask the resident who their program mentor is and consider working with them to ensure the plan incorporates global health goals.

Global Health Competencies:  It is important for residents to be aware of the framework that was used to implement the Track curriculum. We want them to be familiar with the competencies; the only other expectations are that they participate in the curriculum and that they establish and maintain an active relationship with their mentor.

Schedule Next Meeting:  Regular meetings are advised but it is not a requirement of the track for those residents working towards a certificate in Global Health.
