It is possible to travel to a site other than one of our partners. Even though you are arranging this elective on your own, you still must have the experience pre-approved by the Track Leadership and complete the international elective pre- and post-travel requirements in order to receive academic credit.
In this case you are responsible for working with the Track Manager & PedEd Office to do a one-time institutional affiliation agreement (IAA) with the international site and for working with the site directly to make your travel arrangements. You must establish a local preceptor and provide their contact information to the Track Coordinator. As well as establish personal rotation goals & objectives.
Below are reasons you may wish to seek permission to travel to a non-partner site:
You are planning to work in that country post graduation
You or your spouse is a native of that country
You wish to study a specific topic not available at any of the partner sites
You are encouraged to travel to an established partner site because the following are already in place at these sites:
institutional affiliation agreement
site-specific objectives
on-site preceptor
accommodations, travel, etc are known entities
GPS Alliance Travel Approval handled by Track Manager for countries on the State Dept travel warning list
In addition, importantly, having partner sites allows us to develop long-term relationships so that, over time, both the University and the partner site can benefit.
