"The patrol system is not one method in which Scouting for boys can be carried on.
It is the only method."
—Lord Baden-Powell
Troop 268 is organized into groups called Patrols. Patrols work together to develop pride in their group, learn new skills, go on outings, play games and compete in inter-patrol contests. Patrols are mixed with Scouts of various ages, such that each patrol has older Scouts available to guide and instruct younger Scouts. Every 18-24 months the Patrols are re-organized to ensure an appropriate mix of ages and ranks.
Scouts who are newly bridged from Webelos will be assigned to a ‘New Scout Patrol’ led by a Troop Guide; an older Scout who will help the new Scouts get oriented and begin learning basic Scouting skills. This structure helps to ease the transition and gives the new Scouts encouragement and guidance as they learn about Boy Scouts. They will remain in the ‘New Scout Patrol’ for approximately 4 -6 weeks before being assigned to a mixed-age patrol.
Each month the SPL assigns a different patrol to be in charge of the planned troop meeting activities. The ‘patrol in charge’ will carry out such duties as: leading the opening and closing flag ceremonies; planning and arranging instruction for skills training; ensuring that supplies are properly stored and the space is cleaned after each troop meeting; organizing and manning the pancake breakfast for the following month.
